There is a cool project, The Middle Earth Dem Project. I don't know what the dem stands for. This is a mapping project of Middle Earth that creates "Fully georeferenced terrain," real rivers that "flow across the terrain," etc. Meaning it is in 3 "freaking rub peanut butter in my hair" D.

DEM = Digital Elevation Model. A gridded raster, where cell values correspond to a mean elevation at that point in space.
