Word of the Day -- Gumshoe

Gumshoe: a detective, either public or private.

The word gumshoe is said to have originated from the slang word for 'thief'. This is because in the late 1800s, shoes were made of gum rubber and the phrase 'to gumshoe' meant to sneak quietly like a thief. By 1908 however, the term was used to refer to a police detective, which has stuck ever since.
