USS Michael Murphy

Michael Murphy was a lieutenant in the US Navy. He led a Seal team. In 2005 his team of four troopers found themselves embroiled in a massive firefight with over 50 taliban in Afghanistan. They fought ferociously in very rugged terrain. After inflicting heavy casualties and suffering wounds himself and amongst all his team, Murphy moved himself into an exposed position to call in for air support to save his men. He was wounded again, continued to fight and managed to call in their locale. Correction: I had put that the team was extracted. This is not the case. All were killed in action but for one. (thanks for the heads up!)

On Saturday the US Navy commissioned the newest ship into the US Navy, the USS Michael Murphy:

Safe Voyage to her and all who sail her!

Thanks for this news; I hadn't heard.

Incidentally, the rest of the team was NOT extracted. All but one were killed in the firefight. The story of the event, however, is amazing and heart-rending. It's good to know the Navy is showing this kind of respect to an American Hero.
