Word of the Day -- Fighter

There isn't a whole lot about today's word "fighter" out there to give it much, forgive the pun, punch.  It is obviously derived from fight, which is in itself derived from Old English feohtan, meaning to fight.  It came into use around the 12th century, but obviously people were fighting long before the time that word came into use.  Fighter is akin to warrior, though there are differences; for instance, warrior is usually proscribed to someone that is fighting for a cause or allegiance, while fighter is used generically for almost anyone who is fighting, whether it be for a cause, with fists, etc.  One thing for sure, it is an active word, bringing to mind action and offensive action at that.  Like all our heroes in the Lords of Winter Christmas Sale, whether is be for themselves or a noble cause, the word fighter is appropriate for today.  -- Tim Burns
