My lord, if you want a great setting to take you into a Lost World campaign, look no further than the real-life Son Doong Cave in Vietnam. While Mammoth Cave in Kentucky has it over Son Doong in length with 400
miles of passages, and Krubera Cave in the nation of Georgia is the
deepest, Son Doong vies for the title of overall largest cave. This behemoth of a landmark is over 5.5 miles long and sports within its depths a full jungle and a river of its very own! It's also over forty stories high--an entire skyscraper could fit inside!
Even better, this cave lay undiscovered in the depths of the Vietnam jungles until 1991, and wasn't explored until four years ago due to the steep 80-meter drop to get inside, leaving you plenty of room to have a group of 1920's or 30's adventurers stumble upon it.
The mind reels at the possibilities for this location as the centerpiece of a pulp story. What if there are surviving dinosaurs, or an ancient civilization in there...or both? A whole alien ecosystem could exist deep inside a structure like this.
Check the link or photo above for more photos from this breathtaking place. Trust me; it's worth it!
