Evolution of Arms

Here's a very good article over at Wired about the evolution of arms and armor in the medieval period. Its brief but pretty comprehensive in that it gives you a good idea of why the evolution in armor began, taking it from the simple chain hauberk to half plate and beyond. Interesting look at the shield as well.

I had always how fast the American Civil War would have been won if one side used long bows and crossbows. More effective than muskets and faster (reload). After all, they stopped wearing armor ;-)

Hmm - it's not a very informed piece. For example, various cultures came up with protection for the shoulders and legs before medieval period. A better source of info here: http://www.medievalwarfare.info/weapons.htm
