You can't kill the Dog!

I'm reading a book called The Religion. Its quite good, depicting the adventures of a group of people during the Siege of Malta in 1565. Here the Knights of the Order of St. John fought the Turks for possession of the island fortress. After a long, hard fought campaign the Turks were driven off.

But whilst reading it there is a passage about the destruction of the island's dogs. By order of the Grand Master, all dogs were to be slain when the Turks were spied off shore. I'm not sure if this happened, but its an mind numbing entry. We went through this a number of times in Game of Thrones, they keep killing the dire wolves! Its all quite unnatural!

Dogs, like horses, have been part of the human experience for 10000 years, longer probably. They are not creatures that serve at our whim, but rather partners in the trek from the grasslands to concrete jungles. Dogs watched over us as we slept. Dogs hunted our prey, flushing it form the thick grass and the dark forest. Dogs have fought alongside us, risking tooth and claw against beast 10 times their size. Dogs have been and must always be our boon companions in this journey to our stellar destination.

Firefly could have only been better had their been a dog on board Serenity.

Killing them is anathema to our very existence.

They fight along side us . . .

They hunt with us, they heard our beasts of burden . . .

though this one here might need some pointers . . .

They watch over those who need it most . . .

They are our boon companions . . . from the beginning . . .

When in Comfort . . .

And in Need . . .

We owe them a debt.

We can never repay . . .

Cats are pretty cool too!

Unfortunately not all cultures view dogs as mans best friend. Some view them as a food source and the order to kill the dogs was a result of this. It was to ensure there were fewer food resources for the invaders.
