This is exactly the kind of natural event that had medieval English monks convinced that the Scandinavian raiders were sent as a punishment from god with a serpent of flame in the sky.
I remember being in a plane once and passing past a huge supercell thunderstorm. There was arcing lighting coming out of. It was amazing and I thought to myself...that's the wrath for sure!
