A villager of some wealth fled. The rule of the Emperors was disintegrating around him as the might of Rome was being pulled back. The Vandals, crossing the lowlands to the south left a trail of destruction behind them, sacking, killing, looting, burning. But someone thought to safeguard what wealth he could, and moving into the lowlands beyond his village he broke up his worldly goods, some silver plating he cut up, gold coins and little else and hastily buried it.
He never retrieved, slain by the Vandals he feared.
Though of all that we know very little. Because in 2014 the treasure horde was pulled form the marshy ground in the Netherlands. Read more about it here, its a very good read.
