A Spell for Chameleon

I picked A Spell for Chameleon up in the 8th grade while living in Germany. We had access to a small Newstand on post at Patrick Henry Village where we lived in Heidelberg. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was just breaking out of the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lin Carter mold of sci fi and fantasy and looking for something new.

I remember picking up the book and looking through it. I had limited allowance so I had to be careful. I decided to get it because of the cover (a Michael Whelan piece) and used my saved dollars to get it and some comics (can't remember which, probably Warlord or Green Lantern).

When I got home I devoured that book. It was a fantastic read. The suspense was there as you tried to figure out what his magical ability was and once it was revealed, it was awesome.

A very good book, one of the best in that genre of fantasy.

Interestingly, I was listening to Blondie at the time and to this day, whenever Blondie kicks in around the offices, I'm jolted back to A Spell for Chameleon and Bink's wild adventure.

There was an episode of the radio show This American Life that told the true story of a kid that hitchhiked across the country to Piers Anthony's house, because of the Xanth novels. Pretty good story.
