A new program being tested claims to gauge world moods by the content of Twitter posts. It will be able to track the average content of users in regions and use the tone of the twitter posts to determine the mood of the country/region/state/tent/donut shot or what have you.
Its called Emotive.
Twitter claims to have 500 million active users (that is about 1 in every 16 humans on planet Earth tweet every day) with some 340 million daily users. As far fetched as that seems, its far less likely that the twitter users, in say, places like Liberia, are going to represent the average people living in that country. More likely its going to represent the highly educated, wealthy few who can afford 1) an iPhone and 2) the leisure time to get on twitter and bitch about heir respect governments.
