When Worlds Collide

The Hershel Space Observatory found two galaxies in the act of colliding. This helps us understand the nature of how elliptical galaxies came to be; these galaxies are generally populated by older stars and the odd shape of the galaxy defies the norm. It is thought that they may be the end result of two galaxies merging.
