Not to beat a dead horse, but here's an article that suggests that our cousins, the Neanderthals (the coolest name of all species of all things) may have had language skills. Apparently most were right handed, which means that the left side of their brain was developed which means, since that is the primary source of language that they may have had brains developed enough to speak.
This article scares me a little. For several reasons. Somewhere in the subtext I think they are implying that left handed people can't speak? And what's with all the hate on Neanderthals? I just assumed they could speak, they had pointed sticks for pete's sake.

Also what's up with this picture. Is that dude on your left there playing the spoons?

Uhm, no. Demonstrably not. I didn't read the article to see what kind of correlation they were drawing between handedness and brain development -- most homo sapiens are right-handed (at least 10:1 off the top of my head) -- but handedness is generally considered a sign of brain dominance, not development. Just because lefties have right-brain dominance doesn't mean their left brain is stunted or anything silly like that.
