The term "folio", from the Latin folium (leaf), has three interconnected but distinct meanings in the world of books and printing. It is firstly a term for a common method of arranging sheets of paper into book form, folding the sheet only once, and a term for a book made in this way. Secondly it is a
general term for a sheet, leaf or page in (especially) manuscripts and old books, and thirdly an approximate term for the size of a book, and for a book of this size.
As in... The Character Folio from Troll Lord Games:
You plunged into the unknown, fought the trolls of Black Tooth Ridge, slipped across the high walls of the Sea Towns and defeated the Lords of Dro Mandras. You’ve held the net of empty and stolen the jewels of Gwahir. All these moments are yours to hold for all time . . . lest they be forgotten!
We bring you The Character Folio. This little brown book is the perfect tool to log your character’s many adventures. Small and highly portable, the CRF is the perfect size in which to scribble notes during game play and expand on them later.
Each book comes complete with two pages for the vital information of who your character is: name, race, class, level, alignment and language with a section for notes, such as description or origins. It also has the hit point progression for each level.
