Talking about King Kong

I was just babbling Monday about King Kong, one of my favorite stories and movies. Its a great tale of the clash of two ages, the death of one, the rise of another.

Apparently Legendary Entertainment is going to revitalize the film by doing another movie about Kong: Kong: Skull Island. It seems they are breaking from the original concept and doing an origins film on the giant ape. Michael Keaton has just signed on board.

Not sure what to make of this. King Kong is not a monster like Godzilla. Godzilla is easy to franchise as he fights monster after monster. Kong is a little different. He's just a wild animal, the embodiment of all the power and fury of the natural world...to include mankind. He slams head first into the artificial world, the new nature, of man. And the only tie that binds the two lies in Beauty. She is a product of the modern world, but still able to tame the fury of the savage.

An origins story is going to be, lets just say, interesting. We'll see what they do with it.

I love me some Skull Island!

One of the few effective moments in Peter Jackson's version of Kong was scene with the skeletons of the other over-sized apes. If they're doing a movie inspired by the idea of "what happened that left Kong the last of his kind?," I'm interested. A pitched battle between giant apes and an extinction-level foe that the apes win 1-0 is the kind of movie I could get behind.
