In the Meadows of New Foundland (they are more complicated than that, the name, its like Le Anse aux Meadows) two interesting artifacts were unearthed in and around an old Viking campsite. There were two pieces of flint (actually jasper) that the norse used to make fires. The artifacts originated from further south in New Foundland Bay, about 140 odd miles away.
This has led archeologists to postulate that the Vikings ventured that far south to trade with the local natives, the Beothuk.
Its as easy to believe that the split some native's skull and took his jasper to light his fire. Or traded them outside their long house . . . but who can say for sure.
