Upon the Golubac Gorge

Here sits a castle built some 700 years ago. Set upon the Iron Gate, a gorge in the Danube River, the fortress regulated traffic on that mighty waterway for centuries. Originally constructed by the Serbian Kings it changed hands many times from Romanian to Turkish. The fortress witness several massive battles, including one in which the wife a Serbian Lord commanded a flotilla of ships.

It fell into disuse by the middle of the nineteenth century after the Serbian gained their, now, long-standing ownership of it. It has since been peopled with a form of vicious fly called the Golubac Bloodsuckers (I actually made that up, they are called the Golubac Mosquitoes, but it sounds better my way especially if you consider  . . . ) and many believe those flies feast upon the souls of the dead that litter the river of the Iron Gate and the Golubac Fortress.

More on its layout and construction.

Its Almost Time for . . .

The Busho Carnival! In Mohacs Hungary every year they celebrate the end of winter by dressing like sheep and donning wooden masks of frightful demons! The men cross the river Danube in wooden boats carrying all manner of devices and enter the village of Mohacs. Legends report that when the Turks conquered the area that the people of Mohacs fled across the river into the swamps, instigated into creating wild costumes by one of their elders (or perhaps a knight) they waited until a stormy night and crossed back over. Their wild, outlandish garb, demon faces, strange weapons coupled with the storm struck terror into the Turks who fled the village.

Word of the Day -- Benison

No, it's not a weird type of deer meat. :-)  Benison actually means a blessing, or benediction.  "Benison" and its synonym "benediction" share more than a common meaning; the two words come from the same root, the Latin "benedicere," meaning "to bless." ("Benedicere" comes from the Latin "bene dicere"—"to speak well of"—a combination of the Latin "bene," meaning "well," and "dicere," to say.) Of the two words, "benediction" is more common today, but "benison" has a longer history in English. Records show that "benison" has been used in our language since the early 14th century. "Benediction" didn't appear in print until nearly a century later.

Whips of Flame

The sun unleashed a mighty whip of flame recently, coiling the plasma out and into the Darkling Skies around it. This filament of solar plasma is caused when the when the eruption tangles with the sun's magnetic field, causing it to lash about. Some of the energy breaks free, coiling into the Empty, the rest collapse back down upon the sun, pulled back to the madness of flame that is the sun.

This thing is monstrous! Read more or watch the Video!

Of course it may just be a Balrog, a spirit of fire, breaking from the song of Anu!
