A Hole in the Gloom

The day's march ends after night has fallen, upon the banks of the stream, the valley all around, the stars a mirror of the tumbling water. You're laying on your belly, quenching that nagging thirst when a light emerges from the tree line. It sears a hole in the gloom, driving the dark into the shadows, where it weaves a macabre dance.
