Rope
Rope seems central to civilization. We always hear about the wheel and fire, but rope is pretty important too. It ties things together, allows us to go where no one went before, it holds things, up lowers them. Sam needed some while helping Frodo get to Mount Doom. Its uses are endless.
As is the rope.
