Seems like some time ago when mercenaries with swords were the norm of the day that they were paid in yearly installments. The mercenaries spent their money quickly of course and proceeded to rape and pillage surrounding areas to satisfy their desires. In order to stop this employers instituted a regular pay period, spreading the payments out over a year so that the mercenaries would have money all year long.
