So here is an idea. There are two guilds in town X. Both are chandlers. One makes wax candles and the other tallow. The tallow candles are relatively cheap and the guild is, relative to the guild which makes wax candles, very poor. The wax candle makers have hives with bees from which they get their wax.
SO an enterprising young son/daughter of a tallow candle maker decides to sabotage the wax candle maker's guild. SO, she cast spells on the bees such that they grow very large and aggressive. Some small carnage ensues. A war is born. Into this mix the characters are thrown.

A war between candlemakers. Brilliant. Now all we have to do is figure out where the butchers and bakers fit into this...
I'm embarrassed to admit that in a halfling country in my Nod campaign, I conceived of a band of halfling religious extremists that thought the use of tallow in candles was unclean, and were trying to seize control of the country's theocratic government. The idea was inspired by the English civil war. Anyhow - the religious extremists were called the Tallow-Banners.
Matt, I think you are probably closer to a truth than you think. In the middle ages, wax candles were far more highly valued than tallow candles. The wax candle makers had cornered the market with the church and grew very wealthy as a result. It would not be a far stretch to claim that some religious organizations would view the tallow candle as lacking in sacredness.
