Post apocalyptic setting
So the gamma ray burst article linked on a previous post made me think. What if a gamma ray burst hit the earth and obliterated 90% of life and radically altered its climate. The burst would leave much of the infrastructure of man intact but kill plant life and animals. Earth would become a scab and people would be fighting for survival against the elements and one another.

Sounds like a good setting...
I think it has a lot of potential. It would leave a lot of unguarded crap laying around like guns, tanks, airplanes etc with ever diminishing supplies. Then one could throw in a mutant factor and craziness like that.
On top of that,I am thinking 'hardened' areas would have a higher level of survival. This would include military depots, some of NASA's installations, nuclear fallout areas and submarines.
Pull that together and one could come up with a lot of tech combined with some survivors who are going off-planet. What they don't have are raw materials and food.
It could be like a hell on earth and throw in some off-world travel. COuld be a neat setting.
How about finding out the ray came from aliens. War of the worlds kicked off by a real attack.
