Germania
Whenever I think of the Roman Empire, somewhere, lurking upon the edge of my conscious thought are the dark forests of Germany. In Gaul and Italia the Romans lived in relative peace, farming, building, trading goods and doing all those things that all people have always done since we threw up the first mud-brick wall.
Bur across the Rhine, in Germany, the dark forests loomed. Here giants stalked the wooded paths, with huge axes, swords and bear cloak armors! They were wild and free and paid heed to pagan gods, both volatile and fearless.
These were the folk the Romans feared...and the Romans were the most powerful of all the ancients.
Coming soon to Kickstarter....The Codex Germania.

On the Road
My apologies for no posts this past week or such. I hit the road with the family and we enjoyed a 2500 mile journey up through the Badlands, the Black Hills, into Wyoming and down to Colorado and back across the Great Plains.
I encourage everyone to hop in the car and hit the road and see the vast swath of country that is this...er, country. It is huge, beautiful and will really give you a good idea of terrain, weather and the whole shebang.
On the road!!!
We'll get back to regular posting now however!

Killing Tomatoes
There is nothing, or at the very least, very little, that compares to the comedic genius that is Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! Without fanfare, with no exposition, with little need and less desire your plunged into a world where tiny cherry tomatoes have become the terror of the day! Growing to outrageous proportions the beastly creatures become carnivores, devouring all they encounter...sometimes even cooking them.
Its actually quite funny. If you haven't seen it, watch it, it pokes fun at all kinds of things, many of which resonate even today!
The best part is the Senate Committee investigating the tomatoes. Right behind it is this scene...

Doodles
We always like to think we're special. Unique. That somehow we are offering something different. Some new perspective on our food gathering ways. Of course we aren't. We are walking in the footsteps of a whole bunch of other people who doodled then, just like we doodle now.
Because food gathering is boring...generally...i guess sometimes it can be exciting. Like when you mount your steed and charge into the heard of buffalo to lance one, knowing that you can be killed at any moment...or when you have a really good coupon for frosted flakes at the grocery store.
From Erik Kwakkei's Medieval Eye Candy.

The Darkenfold
I'm not sure who did this piece, but its a great representation of the Darkenfold in the world of Aihrde. This is the forest covered in the adventures Mortality of Green, Shades of Mist and Upon the Powder River.
Word of the Day -- Stagecoach
A stagecoach is a type of covered wagon used to carry passengers and goods inside. It is strongly sprung and generally drawn by four horses, usually four-in-hand. Widely used before the introduction of railway transport, it made regular trips between stages or stations, which were places of rest provided for stagecoach travelers.
The business of running stagecoaches or the act of journeying in them was known as staging.
Originating in England, familiar images of the stagecoach are that of a Royal Mail coach passing through a turnpike gate, a Dickensian passenger coach covered in snow pulling up at a coaching inn, and a highwayman demanding a coach to "stand and deliver". The yard of ale drinking glass is associated by legend with stagecoach drivers, though was mainly used for drinking feats and special toasts.
