Dragons that Fly

It turns out that one of the most successful hunters on the planet is the dragonfly. Some estimate it has a 90% kill rate; they are astounding fliers and able to do acrobatics in the air that most insects only dream of, they are quick and agile. The generally capture and eat their prey while airborne, never stopping to rest, able to shovel the creature in and eat it all at once.

Here a great vid by Andrew Mountcastle. Watch the frog as it tries to shovel the long gone dragonfly in its gaping maw. It makes me wonder though, did the frog miss or did the dragonfly dodge make its dex check?

At any rate, the dragon fly can fly. Here's some astounding footage. Gives some really cool pieces on hits maneuvering. Even mates while in flight.This is how dragons should be, in the game, beyond excellent fliers.

But nothing compares to a man hunting with a bow . . . even hunting dragon flies.

Word of the Day -- Boondocks

The word boondocks is a relic of American colonialism. British English imported lots of words from its far-flung colonial possessions, but American colonial aspirations mainly produced words derived from Spanish and adopted with the settling of the West. This one, however, is an exception.

It derives from the Tagalog word bundok, meaning mountain. It was adopted into the language by occupying American soldiers in the Philippines as a word meaning any remote and wild place. By 1909, only some ten years after the American conquest of the islands, the word had caught on enough to rate an entry in that year’s Webster’s New International Dictionary. Despite this, however, it remained primarily a military slang term, especially among Marines, until the 1960s, when, probably because of the Vietnam War, it gained wider, civilian usage.

The Gates to Hell Discovered

Archeologists have discovered what they believe to be the gates to the underworld . . . er, what they believe that the ancients believed to be the gates to the underworld. While digging in and around the city of Heiropolis they found a cave with a stair leading down into it. The article does not tell us how well preserved the site is, but presumably they have evidence to make this assertion.

Apparently the ancients would send animals in as a sacrifice to Pluto; the cave, a source of toxic gases swallowed the beast and killed them almost instantly. Some priests were able to enter, according to the article because they knew where to walk, though this seems a strange approach with lots of problems on the discovery end. But the priests did survive somehow . . .

Of course its possible there were the gates to hell and the priests were blessed and not affected by the weight of death.
