Mean as Hell

The Sandbar fight occurred after a duel in which Jim Bowie as the second, or at least on the side, of another man, a Mr. Wells. The duel ended with no injuries but a brawl broke out when the opposing side decided to settle some old scores with Bowie and the others. In the brawl Jim was shot in the hip and then after drawing his knife had a pistol cracked over his head, he dropped and then was stabbed in the chest with a sword cane. Lunging forward he grabbed his tormentor, pulled him down hard on the Bowie knife he had in hand, killing that fellow instantly. Another man shot him in and he leapt up and chopped off a piece of that fellows arm and then two more shots hit him and everyone fled. This was the Sandbar Fight.

Except Bowie. He went to see a doctor.

post script: The Bowie Knife is slightly different from the Arkansas Toothpick, both weapons were designed by the frontier metalsmith James Black in the Arkansas territory (though there is some confusion here as Rezin Bowie, Jim's brother, always claimed he made the knife). The bowie knife is singled edged with a slight curve to the blade, and about 9 inches long, the toothpick is a straight double-edged blade, up to 18 inches long. Whoever made the, made some fine cutlery.
