The Lycian Way

This 300 miles (500 km) trail winds its way through southwestern Turkey. It crawls along the coast for the most part, but the foot path leads one through some remarkable terrain, the old kingdom of Lycia. It houses the birth place of the chimera, a creature of madness and chaos. Upon those rocky slopes overlooking the blue sea burn the Fires of Lycia.

These flames rise from the earth, scorching the rocks and licking the crisp air. For thousands of years the flames have burned and from them sailors of old witnessed the rise of the chimera; this beast crawled from the blackened earth, a horrid hybrid of a lion, serpent and goat. It terrorized the lands about for many years, for it knew the ancient mariners used the Fires of Lycia to guide them along the coast.
