Glass Explosions

I'm not really sure what the point of the tear drop is, but the exploding glass is pretty dang awesome!

The teardrop shape is how it's made. They drop molten glass into water. The outside cools and hardens faster than the inside. In the fat part, this means the inside contracts and puts a lot of stress on the glass. It also makes it very strong at the head - you can hit it with a hammer. (I'm not sure if the video shows this because I'm at work) The tail is thinner so the hardened part is thinner and you can break it. Once any part is broken, the shockwave travels at about 4,000 mph through the rest of the structure and it disintegrates.

That's in the vid. But why? Why do they make a tear drop glass? is it a bead or for decoration or just accidental?
