Last week Curiosity drilled two small holes in the surface of Mars. He did this to both test equipment and to create a powdered dust that could be sampled in the on board lab. The experiment went off without a hitch, Curiosity following directions of the JPL to the letter. The dust was lifted and tested, some of it heated to turn it into a gas. The sampled gas showed hydrated compounds.
Pretty darn cool.

Damned if Davis doesn't always turn off my number key, drives me nuts.
