An Ode to the Castle Wall

There is something about a wall. It protects you from the haunts of your enemies, both real and imagined, But its value goes far beyond simple protection, for when one passes into its protecting embrace the tensions of the unknown slip away, that nagging feeling of being watched, that touch of horror that lingers on the edge of your mind fades and you can let go the fear. The tensions that bind your shoulder relax and you can become human. They - whoever they are - cannot see you. They cannot know your movements. They cannot harm you.

The windows give you access to what lies beyond, and the roof crowns it all, but the wall, a simple stack of brick and masonry, reduces the primeval world to a memory.

I have always been fascinated with castles. I suspect it is the protection they offer both the mind and the spirit.
