Castaways

Back in 1761 a French slave ship wrecked on a small island in the Indian Ocean. Many were killed by several hundred climbed onto the sandy beaches. There they stayed for several months until the French were able to build a craft out of the ruins of the old and sailed away. They left the slaves behind.

For years the French lieutenant from the original wreck tried to send rescue ships back for those left on the isle but it took years before he could convince the French gov to move. By then they were almost all dead. He was moved so that he took some into his home.

Fascinating read over at Archeology Magazine. Check it out.
