Heidelberg Castle overlooks the town of Heidelberg and guards the passage of the Neckar River. A castle was first built upon the river in and around 1214. It slowly expanded over the centuries to include a second castle, bastions to link them, gigantic towers, and deep dungeons. For almost a thousand years it has persevered, through terrible storms that destroyed its main towers, wars, sieges, neglect and time.
It still stands today, a huge sprawling fortress, watching the river as if a massive stone giant.
And if all that isn't cool enough, it has one of the world's largest beer barrels.
