A 90 pound (40kg) rock smashed into the moon this past March. It ignited a huge fireball and explosion, the biggest recorded by some estimates. The rock was moving at 56000 miles per hour when it hit our little sister. The contact was caught on camera and can be seen as the bright light in the still below. The blast lasted a few seconds only, but shone bright enough to be seen by the naked eye.
Maybe it does pay to eyeball the moon! Video of the event.
