Born in Fire Ash

Literally. Scientists have been watching the birth of an Island off the coast of Japan. It broke the ocean's surface last year and has steadily grown as it continues to vomit ash and rock from the seabed. The island is growing so fast that it has connected with a larger, much older, volcanic island. Named Niijima the little fellow had grown 196 feet above sea level, taller now than the larger Nishino-Shima.
