Centralia is Still Burning

This sounds like some C&C adventure in the making...apparently in 1962 some dude lit a fire on a trash dump located next to an exposed coal mine. It caught the coal on fire and slowly spread. The town scrambled to put it out but failed, as has every attempt to do so since it started.

Its still burning.

It eventually opened up all manner of hell, releasing toxic gases and chemicals that rose through the ground, into peoples homes, businesses, through the sewers and streets. Roads decayed and split, homes became unlivable until the whole town eventually drifted away.
