Fort Bowie
During the long, grueling wars with the Apaches in Arizona and New Mexico the US Cavalry operated out of several forts in and around those desert states. Arguably the most important was Fort Bowie, situated in south-eastern Arizona at Apache Pass between the Chiricahua and Doz Cabezas Mountains.
Then and now.
Geronimo was one of many leaders that led the Apaches in those wars, though he was never a chief. They all raided primarily in Mexico but their homelands lay in New Mexico and Arizona. They proved almost impossible to catch and bring to battle, and as often as not, when they were, they fought the Mexicans or US Cavalry to a standstill.
