Rolling Bad

I had the opportunity to see first, to be reminded of it rather, how bad and good rolls can knock you all around at the table.

In running a game for a bunch of youngins this past week I watched one of the roll horribly all night. He kept getting more and more downcast, angry, frustrated. And then when his missing streak ended and he hit he rolled a "1" for damage. He hit next time and rolled a "1" again and then a "2". I thought the poor guy's head was going to explode.

It was compounded by another players bad luck turned awesome with a natural 20 on his death swing (I often give a falling character a final swing, whether its extra or not) scoring an instant kill on the crit tables. This drove his frustration to unbelievable heights.

So after that he was alone against 1 orc with 7 hit points. Another 10 orcs were charging, but their morale was very low (as 20 of their people were already dead). Well dude man rolls, wins initiative and then swings. Everyone is watching. Boom! Its a hit. Then the damage. On top of all the 1's and 2's and the misses he was all bound up and keyed to a fevered pitch. When that 8 hit on the d8 he went absolutely insane!

Arms in the air! Out of the chair! Shouts and screams that devolved into simple growls and grunts of pure adrenaline and power!

It was pretty cool.

That's gaming!

The Undead

The Forentz (Gnomes of AIhrde)

In those days the giants too were wandering far and wide and some came upon the forentz in their holes on the banks of the river. They dislodged them and drove them into the Lands of Ursal. The forentz were distraught for they had no thought for war or battle and their peace was shattered. The came to the norther vales of the Ethvold and their Tefnut spied them and took pity upon them. She called to her sister, Mordius, and bid her bid take them under her care, for she knew that Mordius loved all the creatures of the Faul Erde.

Mordius found them upon the slopes of the Bergrucken and she brought them over the high mountains through the Valley of Ix and showed them the lands of the Massif. There the grass grew deep, waters by many creeks and streams and the whole of Lake Orion. The lands were ringed by mountains which served to keep the lands safe from many of the wandering creatures of those days. So the fortentz settled along the feet of the mountain and spread out into the rolling plains and along the banks of the river.

For many long years Mordius came to them at their call and she taught them how to draw food from the earth, how to hunt and fashion many diverse tools. She taught them a new language and it was their tongue ever after, and shared only reluctantly with other peoples. They worshipped her as the Mother from those days ever after and her name is a holy word in their tongue and one they will not allow disparaged.

When Ornduhl slew Mordius the forentz became a quiet people and would treat with few others. Ever after they hated the Red God and all his servants. In these days the first of Hurgin Dun entered the annals and these were hunters, who tracked the Red God's servants and slew them where ever they could.

Blade Runner Sequel

We all know that Bladerunner is going to get a sequel. Harrison Ford is on board to reprise the role of  Deckard, the bounty hunter. Not much news on what the story is about, other than Deckard has to deal with the fact that he is a replicant, and that Ridley Scott won't be directing the movie. That has been turned over to Denis Villenueve whose done such films as the soon to be released Sicario.

Not sure how to take this. Scott is staying on as producer which is good for hands on and has final say on cuts, but there is something about his films that go beyond the norm. That said Villeneuve may be just the right guy to take up the job.

We won't know until the film rolls, but we can still look forward to it.

Word of the Day -- Balkans

The Balkan Peninsula, popularly referred to as the Balkans, is a geographical region of Southeast Europe. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch from the east of Serbia to the Black Sea at the east of Bulgaria. The Balkans are generally considered to include, in whole or in part, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo,[a] the Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Romania, and the European part of Turkey.

The region is inhabited by Albanians, Aromanians, Bulgarians, Bosniaks, Croats, Gorani, Greeks, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, Slovenes, Romanians, Turks, and other ethnic groups which present minorities in certain countries like the Romani and Ashkali. The largest religion on the Balkans is Orthodox Christianity, followed by Roman Catholicism and Islam.

The total area of the Balkans is 666,700 square km (257,400 square miles) and the population is 59,297,000 (est. 2002). The Balkans meets the Adriatic Sea on the northwest, Ionian Sea on the southwest, the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea on the south and southeast, and the Black Sea on the east and northeast. The highest point of the Balkans is Mount Musala 2,925 metres (9,596 ft) on the Rila mountain range in Bulgaria. The Balkans have been inhabited since the Paleolithic and are the route by which farming from the Middle East spread to Europe during the Neolithic (7th millennium BC). The Balkans are also the location of the first advanced civilizations. The Vinča culture developed a form of proto-writing before the Sumerians and Minoans, known as the Old European script, while the bulk of the symbols had been created in the period between 4500 and 4000 BC, with the ones on the Tărtăria clay tablets even dating back to around 5300 BC.
