The Power of Robert Kirkman!

Robert Kirkman, the creator and writer of The Walking Dead was voted the most powerful comics writer in Hollywood by the Hollywood Reporter. The tv show based on his wildly hot selling graphic novels is the number one show in the 18-40 year olds.

People just love it.

And he's such a nice guy.

Imaginairum ~ Cities Tomorrow

Upon the Edge of Myth

Archeologists have unearthed a relief depicting an unknown Roman or Near Eastern god. The stonework, found in ancient Turkey, shows a bearded god rising from some type of flowered plant. The temple where the relief was unearthed was dedicated to the Roman God Jupiter, or one of his many faces, but the imagery does not resemble how that god was normally depicted.

Likely as not its a hybridization of several gods, Roman and Near Eastern. Pretty cool.

Honestly to my untrained, in expert eyes he does not look Roman at all, but very Near Eastern.

UFO Files

A trick of the light, or something more? A witness in Georgia snapped a shot of a UFO flying over the high way. He spied the object from his driveway while heading out for a walk. Its clearly far away and up high, but no clear what it is.

From the witness: “From the distance of height I venture to guess it was possibly not as large as a commercial aircraft, but perhaps the size of a private airplane. I had the impression it seemed to be ascending but also seemed to be floating and at first moved slowly.” He snapped the shots, turned away and when he looked back it was gone.

This weekend's villain....

Enjoying Constantine?

If you are, then you should probably speak up. The network ordered 13 episodes, but has not made any commitment beyond that. Normally, for a strong show the network would kick in at this point and order another 13. But they have not. The ratings were good enough to not immediately cancel but not so good to open up a commitment.

So go to your twitter page and #saveconstantine and put in your two cents. Daniele Cerone, the title character in the show, is leading the charge.

If twitter had existed during the age of Firefly, what could have happened?

At the Very Least

She's being gentle. But this isn't going well.

Daily Cosplay (Wasp)

Apollo's Crib Found

On the island of Delos, or rather, off the island of Delos archeologists discovered an ancient Greek settlement. Lying about six feet under water the settlements sports a pottery barn. Er, not a pottery barn, but rather a pottery workshop. Delos was of course the birth place of Apollo and held sacred by ancient Greeks. It became a thriving center for commerce, particularly the slave trade.

Delos lies south and east of Athens, close the larger island of Mikonos.

Discovery News

Of course, one of these days these ancient gods are going to get tired of modern man mucking around in there old playgrounds. Then there will be heck to pay!

Wonder Woman Gets Direction

Michelle McLaren has been chosen by Warner Bros. to direct the new Wonder Woman movie. She's been a main stay in entertainment for awhile, producing Xfiles for one, but also has direction credits with shows like Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead. I tried to find out which three episodes...well I didn't try very hard...but couldn't find which ones.

But both those shows are good for the small screen, so she'll have a leg up on doing a feature film. Keep it gritty. That's my hope.

Scientist Thinks Out of the Text Book

This article just annoyed me. "Alien Life Could Thrive on "Supercritical" Co2 Instead of Water." That's the headline. It seems a no brainer to assume that life could take other forms than the forms we are familiar with here on earth. One could probably speculate, with some degree of certainty, that other planets will have different biospheres than earth and therefore life, might, might mind you, take on a different form.

Of course the article had to sideline you with a reminder about global warming. And whether you believe in that or not, it should annoy you. It seems as if all science now is tied to the concept of global warming. You need air in your tires? Study shows that CO2 cause global warming and yes you do.

For pete sake, drop the GW in every article.

But more importantly if you don't embrace at least the CONCEPT that life might take on different forms and have as its base something other than carbon, you should leave science and go make a sandwich. See how many different types of sandwiches you can make and use that as a lesson plane.

UFO Files

I like the "what the heck" moments that come with UFOs. When your looking up at the night sky, and we've all done it, and you see something you can't readily explain. You mind shifts into overdrive. It attempts to dissect what it sees, create a framework to explain it, so that it can rest at ease. Its a variant of the flight or fight sequence that keeps creatures alive. The mind must understand what it sees, or the body must fight it or flee from it.

The UFO encapsulates that. You can't fight it, not readily. Running is an option, but form what? Its in the understanding that give you that moment of control, that might keep you from taking the unnecessary risk involved with fleeing. Its what the deer does when it sees the headlights of an oncoming car.

Fight it? Flee? But what is it?

Of course the "what is it" is the dangerous part. If you take too long to figure it out, like the deer, it might be too late.

Of course the UFO is deeper than that. It touches on some part of us that fires our imagination. We know instinctively that any aliens coming our way are probably not doing so out of kindness, but still we harbor some hope that  it will be otherwise. Some greater knowledge or wisdom, lies beyond the horizon.

Of course, if history is any teacher . . . .

Hunger Games Opens Big

Mockingjay Part 1 of the Hunger Games trilogy opened big this weekend, raking in 123 million dollars. Its down a little from Catching Fire, but insanely strong regardless.

They are very good books and the movies hit the nail on the head so are well worth the watch. And I must say they do a good job explaining what is going on. Too often movies that were adapted from books are a bit confusing and don't really cover the plot well. The Hunger Games do.

I'd recommend book and movies. In either order. Cool stuff.

Word of the Day -- Samnite

A Samnite (Latin Samnis, plural Samnites) was a Roman gladiator who fought with equipment styled on that of a warrior from Samnium: a short sword (gladius), a rectangular shield (scutum), a greave (ocrea), and a helmet. Warriors armed in such a way were the earliest gladiators in the Roman games. They appeared in Rome shortly after the defeat of Samnium in the 4th century BC, apparently adopted from the victory celebrations of Rome's allies in Campania. By arming low-status gladiators in the manner of a defeated foe, Romans mocked the Samnites and appropriated martial elements of their culture.
Samnites were quite popular during the period of Roman Republic. Eventually, other gladiator types joined the roster, such as the Gaul and the Thracian. Under the reign of Emperor Augustus, Samnium became an ally and integral part of the Roman Empire (all Italians had by this point gained Roman citizenship). Around this time, the Samnite gladiator fell out of favour, probably because insulting the Samnites was no longer seen as acceptable behaviour. The Samnite was replaced by similarly armed gladiators, including the hoplomachus and the secutor.

Eve Online Trailer

Okay, this looks insanely complicated, but the graphics here are through the roof. Very cool trailer.

I wish this video game companies would buyout hollywood and start making movies that look this cool.

Riddick

Watched me a little Riddick last night.

These are good movies. I've always enjoyed them. The first one, Pitch Black, is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. The second one, the Chronicles of Riddick, is good but the third one captures the feel of the first one. If that sentence made sense I'll be surprised.

Anyway, good movies. Watch if you haven't.

Sexiest Man of the Year

Okay, Woody Allen getting the title back in the 70s was a bit much, but People Magazine might be right about this one.

Sexiest Man of the Year

Damn I need to go do some crunches . . . .

Wolves

This has to be one of the coolest animals to walk the earth. Its nice to know that their populations have all rebounded in North America.

Though I would rather not be caught in the wilds by a pack of them. I watched my hounds take Todd down one day. Todd's a big dude, over six feet and watching two healers and a Australian Shepard take him to the ground was amazing.  One hit him at an angle from behind, biting his shirt and swinging herself around while holding the shirt. Her momentum turned town in that direction and the other hit him from the side to continue him in that direction and third hit him about 4 seconds later and he spun all the way around and landed on his back.

Nothing short of amazing.

And a little scary.
